I think that the author was foreshadowing that Jem and Scout will also find out something later in the story that they did not know about their father.

Who has found the other two scenes in the book where Atticus faces a challenge and Scout thinks back to the time he shot the mad dog? Remember how Heck Tate wanted Atticus to shoot the dog? Why? What did that scene symbolize?

im noticing how people keep saying "I don't understand what the big deal is, the dog was moving so slowly" the problem is, a dog with rabies is so dangerous and unpredictable he could suddenly rampage into someone. That is why Atticus had to hurry over and put the dog out of his misory.

in the movie the dog was standing still and he walked straight up to it and shot it...... with iron sights thats still good. if he had a scope on his gun.. wich he doesnt it would be a much easier shot.

im was really confused on why the authoe put that in, but i think he did that to show that unusuall things are happening in the book, because calpurnia said it was unusuall to have a mad dogg at that time of the year

I was suprised that atticus shot the dog right in frount of jem because jem might start just shoting any old animal with his air rifel and get in trouble.

I think the author put Attitcus shooting the dog in the book to show Jem that his father is known for something. jem always complains that Atticus can't play football or is too old to do anything. so, it showed Jem that his father can do something besides just work.

I think that it is a bit ironic because right after Jem says Atticus can't do anything, he shoots the dog to show Jem that he can do something. It is put in there to reveal to Jem that his father can do something other than play checkers.

When Mr.Johnson's dog went mad, it suprised me what Atticus' reaction was. I did think Atticus would, ever shoot anything. I think the author included this section where Atticus shot the dog because, Jem and Scout keep saying how old Atticus was and how he couldn't do anything like the other fathers in Maycomb.

i think the author included this to show that atticus was good at something and to show to jem that he could do something

What happened at this scene is that Atticus had to shoot a Mad dog that was coming towards Calpurnia and Jem and Scout. What suprised me was that Atticus shot the dog instead of Heck Tate who was the sherrif, anyways couldn't Heck Tate get in trouble for letting Atticus shoot the Mad dog. I think the author included this because it showed that Atticus wasn' a boring old man. that he had a nice shot. It also showed Jem that atticus wasn't boring. Very Happy Smile Sad Surprised

the reason why i think this was added becuase atticus was that one guy who really never did anything and never told anyone but his past. A mad dog was going toward cal, jem, and scout. cal called atticus and atticus called hect tate. tate said he couldnt shoot that far and asked atticus to do it becuase he was a good shooter. it supriesed jem and scout becuase they never knew that.

This chapter was a little bit confusing to follow, but now i understand it. I thought it was weird that at first Atticus didnt want to shoot the dog because he didnt think he could. He had said before that he didnt like guns or shooting things. When he ended up shooting at the "mad dog" I was really surprised because he hit him perfectly.

In this chapter, a mad dog named Tim Johnson gets shot by Atticus. I think this part was awesome because Atticus blew the dog away in one shot and didn't even think he could do it. I believe that the author incuded this because they wanted to show that Atticus hides a lot of his talent and he also that he is willing to use them to help make Maycomb a better place. I also think this was included because the author wanted us to know that Atticus might not of wanted to let Jem and Scout have guns because he might of had a bad experience before because he is such a good shot.

At first, i really didn't get why the author put the mad dog in the book. it was just really random and seemed insignificant. then i realized that the kids thought atticus was boring and he couldn't do anything. this showed that he was actually good with a gun and there was a lot about atticus we didn't know.

I agree, I think that the mad dog was put in the book to surprise readers and to show them that Atticus wasn't just a boring old dad and to prepare readers for what comes later inthe book.

what happened here was that jem was outside shooting his bb gun that he had recieved as a gift from atticus, and then he saw a mad dog coming up the street toward the radley's house. then jem went inside to tell cal and then cal called atticus and then she had the operator tell everyone on the street that a mad dog was coming and to close all their dorrs and shut their windows. then atticus and officer heck tate came with a gun, and heck told atticus to shoot because it was a one hit job and heck couldnt shoot very well but atticus could. the thing that surprised me the most was that heck tate the officer of maycomb could barley shoot his gun, by all means he could shoot the gun, but he couldnt hit the target he was aiming at. i think that the reason that the author included this in the novel was to show that atticus could to many things that none of ther other parents in maycomb could do. even though atticus was old, he could still do more amazing things then any of the other younger parents could ever do their entire lives!
